NMBA celebrates midwives on International Day of the Midwife

05 May 2025

Today, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) celebrates the International Day of the Midwife and acknowledges the safe and invaluable healthcare midwives provide throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the postpartum period.

This year’s theme, ‘Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis’, highlights the vital role midwives play in preparing healthcare systems to be ready, and ensuring continuity of care, during humanitarian and other crises.

To ensure that one of the world’s oldest professions is well-prepared for the uncertainties of the future, the NMBA partnered with the Burnet Institute to review Australia’s midwifery workforce. The final report, Midwifery Futures: Building the Australian midwifery workforce, was delivered late last year. It made 32 recommendations that pave the way for governments, employers, higher education and professional bodies to grow the midwifery workforce and safeguard its future.

The NMBA continues to engage with the Commonwealth, states and territories and other key stakeholders to identify ways we can deliver on those recommendations and ensure a strong midwifery workforce. The report may also form part of the evidence base for advancing the Health Workforce Taskforce’s National Maternity Workforce Strategy.

NMBA Chair, Adjunct Professor Veronica Casey AM, thanked midwives for continuing to improve the health of women and families across Australia.

‘On behalf of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, I want to wish you a happy International Day of the Midwife. Thank you for the professionalism and dedication you display in providing safe, high-quality health services to those in your care.’
